In April of 2021, several BUILD students and technicians participated in the virtual Festival of Scholars at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Organized by the Xavier University of Louisiana Center for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (CURGO), the Festival of Scholars is an opportunity for Xavier students and faculty to present their research and creative work to the entire campus community.
CURGO and Xavier’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted an in-person kick-off event on April 8. Students enjoyed food, a raffle, and performances by the Xavier pom squad. Masks were required to attend, and COVID-19 safety compliance was enforced.
An annual event, the 2021 Festival of Scholars was held virtually in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-recorded presentations were available to view starting April 5 and live presentations could be seen from April 8-9th. Around 60 students presented their work.
Presentation options were made available to all Xavier students and faculty. Xavier is recognized as the number one producer of African American graduates who become physicians, but it also has excellent award-winning programs in the liberal arts. The Festival of Scholars exists to highlight not only the STEM disciplines but also the fine arts.
Though the Festival had to be primarily virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it still uplifted the community by allowing Xavierites to strengthen bonds with peers and professors.
Nine BUILD trainees presented either live or by a pre-recorded session.
