The following BUILD institutions were represented in the AMT session: California State University Long Beach; California State University Northridge; Morgan State University; San Francisco State University; University of Alaska Fairbanks; University of Texas El Paso; Wayne State University (Detroit Consortium – including University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College); and Xavier University of Louisiana. The group will reach out to Portland State University and University of Maryland Baltimore County, and additional BUILD institutions that were not able to attend the session. Additionally, both the CEC and NIH had representatives who attended and participated in the session.
The linked tentative agenda was presented at the session and all agreed to discuss the listed topics but to allow any other topics to evolve organically. After some discussion, the participants agreed to limit the scope of the group’s work to mentor training; mentee training would be included only to the extent that it related to the mentor-mentee relationship.
The group went on to discuss possible mechanisms to meet and exchange information. These included Google apps such as Meet and Docs. One of the first deliverables the group agreed to produce was a table of information about the mentor training activities at each of the BUILD institutions. The group discussed what types of information we wanted to see on the table. Suggestions included: descriptions of training programs/activities; assessment strategies; archived mentor training; training statistics (who and how many are being trained); and any type of training certification.
A representative from each of the BUILD institutions present gave a summary of the mentor training activities at their site, and participants exchanged ideas and information. The discussion culminated in an agreement among the participants to meet on a quarterly basis to update and exchange information. There was also a strong push to have some type of listserv for the group to facilitate ongoing communication.
